Written by Charlotte Wood (last updated March 4, 2009)

Constipation is quite an uncomfortable feeling—it can be distracting and can really throw a wrench in your day. Everyone gets constipation now and again, and sometimes you really need some relief. So, how do you relieve constipation? Constipation can have a variety of causes and can sometimes be solely constipation. If you're looking to relieve your constipation, then here are a few guidelines to follow.

One of the remedies you can try is simple drugs. You can buy laxatives at any drugstore, or you can get a prescription from your doctor. Laxatives will work to clear up your system, thus relieving your discomfort. This is a remedy that you should use with discretion, however. It is possible to get addicted to laxatives, which is something that can be extremely harmful to your health. Laxatives work well for the occasional occurrence of constipation, but once again, it should only be every once in a while.

You can also try improving your diet and lifestyle to help prevent and treat constipation. You'll want to eat plenty of fiber to increase the efficiency and functionality of your digestive system. You should try and get between 24 and 36 grams of fiber a day. Look for any foods that are high in fiber—these can be found at special health foods stores, or just by checking the nutritional labels on the food you buy. Add high fiber to your diet gradually, or else you risk experiencing the opposite effect.

You'll want to drink plenty of water—about eight glasses a day. Drinking a proper amount of water will relieve your constipation and will also improve your overall health. Regular exercise will also help your constipation. When you keep your body active, you actually improve the workings on the inside of your body, including your digestive tract. If you're eating too much "hard animal fat," like cheese, whole milk, and other processed foods, then you'll definitely want to cut back on that, which will also help relieve your constipation.

Reducing your stress is another way to improve your constipation. By eliminating stress, you help improve the efficiency of your body and you take unneeded pressure off. Reduce your stress by getting enough sleep, relaxing enough, and keeping up a positive attitude. This remedy for constipation is definitely more long term, and so if you want it to take effect, you need to make these tips habits. Drugs work for the immediate constipation alleviation, but you can't depend on them—the healthy thing to do is to develop healthy habits.
