Preparing Yourself for Weight Loss

Written by Cassandra Merkling (last updated September 1, 2009)

So you've finally decided that you are going to lose weight. Do you know where to start? The best place is the mind. It does no good if you are dieting and exercising and still think of yourself as a fat person because eventually, you will go back to being the person outside that you believe you are inside. You need to prepare yourself mentally for the task ahead. First, you have to change your attitude. Picture yourself thin and healthy. What are you doing? Who are you with? What are you wearing? How do you feel? What kind of person are you? Take into consideration as much as you can about your new life as this thin person. Make the experience as vivid as possible and see the new you as someone who already exists, who has been stuck inside your present body and deserves the chance to come out and enjoy life. Now you have started to prepare yourself for weight loss.

Next, think about that person again, but consider what this thin person has to do to stay thin. Think about all the things he will be eating. Do you think your thin self will be eating everything in sight and stay thin? Your expectations are unreasonable, then. Your thin self will have to work a lot harder at being thin than you have been doing. He watches what he eats. He may have given up eating from the bread basket at restaurants. Think about all the sacrifices he's making to keep feeling wonderful and clean and healthy. Remember that he is happy living his thin life, so do not mourn what you will be missing. Mourn what you have missed already and be happy that you do not have to give up the experiences of life anymore.

Next, get a plan together. Think about how you can begin to live the life of the thin you. Remember that this is the person you really are inside, so do not be afraid of trying new things (like vegetables that were previously foreign to you) and new philosophies. Think about approaches that have helped you in other areas of your life. Do you tend to be the kind of person who needs to understand things or change your thinking before you can accomplish a change in your life? You may do well with a book like The Beck Diet Solution. Do you prefer to be more aware? You may be better off with a book like I Can Make You Thin. Once you have a plan, you can start carrying it out and finally regain lost time.
